Bo Diddley Dies at 79.

Bo Diddley passed away of heart failure.  He was 79.  I feel like I must write something about it as AlbertsGifts.com deals with musical oriented gifts, and Diddley was certainly a rock icon, who must be mentioned in the shaping of modern rock and other musical genres of today.

Although not as famous as his label mate Chuck Berry, he arrived on the music scene with his musical adaptation Bo Diddley- I’m A Man at the age of 26.  Already present in these recordings was his attitude and his swagger.  Often his musical writings dealt with himself in third person, and desribing himself as “a lover, a gunslinger, a lumberjack, and more.”  As influential to the music industry as he was, Bo Diddley, never broke the top 20, but had 10 R&B hits in his lifetime.

Diddley has also been givin certain credits in his life that have impacted other facets of the music indrusty.  In his song Say Man which was his biggest pop hit, Diddley, and his Maraca player Jerome Green traded insults and bragged about each other.  This was the first known lyrical progression to the larger than life style rap that we have today.  Also, he was known for playing his own custom guitars and designing them to how he see fit.  Which led to newer generation artists making custom guitars and showing off more of creative style.

Bo Diddley certainly will be missed and will always be hailed as an artist that led to advancements in progression with rock music and other genres.   Bo Diddley 1928-2008

Another Social Music Site.

Another new music site has surfaced thats not really about music gifts its called http://music.podshow.com/ and it takes aim at providing an outsource to music lovers and musicians alike.  This music site enables users to create pod casts, music, blogs, or any other useful function to a networking site to provide incite on all things music.  It’s been my goal as of late to try and find some new networking sites for friends/family, because they are simply tired of the mega giants, and finding friends that aren’t of the same interests.

Of all the sites I have found, Imeem and Music.Podshow, have been the two most unique finds for music lovers so far.  Of course you could always try and register for the music giant purevolume.  But hey, why be trendy…do your own thing, and of course you can always pick up great music gifts at Alberts Gifts.

Whats on your music playlist?

Posted in Music on May 9th, 2008 by admin – Be the first to comment

A social networking site, aimed at exposing artists and users alike to new forms of music.  http://www.imeem.com/ immerses users into a world of pure musical bliss, by one simple statement “Whats on your play list?”  Although competing with mega giants such as myspace and facebook, IMEEM seems to take another edge on the social networking scene by providing artists another great escape to compliment their purevolume accounts.

Being able to search your local networks is the same as all the other networking sites.  The only thing I really enjoy about the aspect of all this, is that music and media is the key, find people that have your interests!  I largely enjoy being able to communicate with someone who loves my taste in music, it’s just a pretty good feeling over all.  Of course though, while your searching for new bands to hear, check out our new products at Albertsgifts.com and find some great ideas for yourself!

Social network aims to target older generation.

Posted in Music on April 23rd, 2008 by admin – Be the first to comment

A social network called www.getback.com focuses it’s aim towards an older crowd with music/tv shows from 1960-1990.  Getback.com has given light to an older generation often left out by the two biggest social sites myspace.com and facebook.com, by providing a media outlet for music and tv shows from the past.  Alex Woodsen from Yahoo.com writes,

“A clear difference between GetBack and the social networking giants is that the site comes with content. Instead of a user having to go out and find a U2 video to put on their page, for example, the site already has that content available.

The site features movie trailers through an agreement with ScreenPlay, a service that has deals with all the major studios, and the pages feature 30-second samples of 750,000 songs through an agreement with All Media Guide….

GetBack will present options to buy music through Apple’s iTunes and Amazon as well as rent films through Netflix. The company will get an affiliate fee from sales of the media through iTunes and Amazon and a bounty fee from Netflix if a user signs up through the service.

The site also has a deal with Hulu, the NBC Universal/News Corp. online video venture, which has such older shows as “Kojak,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The A-Team.” ”

MySpace tries to grab a piece of digital music sales

Posted in Music on April 4th, 2008 by admin – Be the first to comment

In a move that will put it in direct competition with Apple’s iTunes, MySpace announced Thursday that it is creating an online music store that will allow its legions of users to buy and stream millions of songs.MySpace, the world’s largest social network, said it was forming a joint venture with three of the four largest music labels, which will power its beefed-up music platform called MySpace Music. MySpace officials said the joint venture is a natural extension of MySpace’s music heritage and a dramatic shift in the way consumers access musical content.

By embedding a store in a social network, officials hope to create a more dynamic connection between artist and consumer, one that will ultimately lead to more robust sales of music and related items.

MySpace music fans already have built up strong relationships with their favorite artists by visiting their MySpace profiles, where they can read lyrics, view information and upcoming concert dates and stream a handful of songs or videos. Users will now be able to buy music – much of it without digital rights management protections – purchase ring tones, stream a larger number of ad-support songs and videos, and even purchase merchandise and concert tickets right from an artist’s MySpace page. It’ll be a one-stop shop for all things music-related, MySpace executives said.

“What we’re talking about is creating a much richer experience that incorporates music downloads as just one component,” said Chief Operating Officer Amit Kapur. “Now people will experience music online in a radically different way. It will be become much more mainstream.”

MySpace takes the lead

The terms of the deal were not released, but the agreement calls for MySpace to head up a new company that includes board members from Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. EMI, the lone major holdout, is reportedly in talks to join.

The joint venture, which will roll out in the coming months, provides a potential heavyweight competitor to Apple’s iTunes, the largest online music store. MySpace boasts 110 million members, 30 million of whom already visit MySpace’s music platform. MySpace also has more than 5 million artist profiles, including many unsigned and independent performers.

For the music labels, the partnership with MySpace highlights their growing acceptance and embracing of online distribution. It also provides them with an alternative to Apple, which has done a lot to set the pricing of music online through its leadership position, often to the chagrin of music executives.

Record industry leaders said the MySpace deal gives them an innovative way to reach consumers, one that may change the way they sell their music. That’s important, because sales of music slipped from $15 billion in 1999 to $11.5 billion in 2006.

“We believe that one of the greatest growth opportunities for our industry is to develop new partnerships and models focused on unlocking the value of music in the online community space,” Edgar Bronfman Jr., chairman and CEO of Warner Music Group, said in a statement. “This venture may provide a defining blueprint for this next important stage in the evolution of social media, benefiting consumers, artists and music companies alike.”

Going for younger crowd

Susan Kevorkian, an analyst with IDC, said MySpace Music offers labels an effective way to target younger online customers, especially those who are likely to be downloading music illegally. She said the sharing and recommendation inherent in social networks can help drive sales among users who have been slowing their music purchases lately.

“It’s a new way to appeal to younger consumers who have been the biggest users of file sharing networks. Some of them have been disillusioned by the recording industry’s lawsuits against file sharers,” Kevorkian said. “This is a new way to cultivate relationships with this group.”

Kevorkian, program director for consumer markets at IDC, said the new music service might give Apple pause and it might prompt it to work more closely with the record companies, which have pushed for more flexible pricing on iTunes songs and albums.

David Card, an analyst with JupiterResearch, called the deal a “keystone event” that could shake up the digital music world. But he wrote in his blog Thursday that there are plenty of questions about the experience users will have when accessing ad-supported content. Will the ads be intrusive and will the advertisers unlock a large library of free content?

And he said it’s still an uphill climb selling songs online.

“Amazon’s got a great digital downloads store, and it’s a retailer, and it doesn’t seem to have juiced digital download sales yet,” Card wrote. “Still watching that one.”

The Grammys Are they going to happen?

Posted in Music on January 17th, 2008 by admin – Be the first to comment

This is a question on everyone’s mind. Maybe not the first thing but I bet you have that lingering question Is it going to happen? The 50th annual Grammy Awards are scheduled to air February 10 at 8 pm et/pt on CBS live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

In an argument likely to be repeated in spirit by the Motion Picture Academy in coming weeks, Academy President Neil Portnow noted “Grammy Week represents the most significant worldwide music event of the year. And we are in a different industry than the motion picture and television business; I am quite certain that most are aware of the extremely difficult and challenging conditions facing our industry’s creators and companies, unparalleled in our history. This year, more than ever, Grammy Week and the milestone of a 50th Grammy Awards, along with the 50th Anniversary of the founding of The Recording Academy, are a centerpiece and beacon of hope, optimism, and represent literally multi-millions of dollars in sales, promotion, and marketing for our musicians and as such, take on far more significance than simply three and one-half hours of television programming.”

With a Golden Globes-type boycott by actor-presenters and some music stars, The Recording Academy has issued a request/plea to the Writers Guild of America to call off a picket or the Grammys and grant it an interim agreement like the one issued David Letterman and his Worldwide Pants company.

“Today the producers of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards requested an interim agreement from the WGA for the telecast on February 10. The Recording Academy remains hopeful that there will be a quick and positive response,” stated Portnow.

A spokesman for the Writers Guild of America stated they would likely not grant the waiver, though Tuesday evening they issued a statement saying they formally received the request and would ponder it further. “This request will be referred to the WGAW Board of Directors for decision.”

The Screen Actors Guild will be telling its members not to cross the line if the waiver is not granted. “The WGA has informed us that this is struck work, and they expect to have a picket line in place. Nominees that are also actors include Justin Timberlake, Queen Latifah, Tim McGraw, Beyonce, Jack White, Jon Bon Jovi and Fantastia.

The WGA granted an interim agreement to the NAACP so that its Image Awards could still be broadcast.

The Grammys would not be struck as hard as the Globes which had all 70 actor nominees boycott the show and force a cancellation — yet a dozen or so SAG actors who present Grammys and an unknown number of strike-sympathetic artists could refuse to cross the picket line, even symbolically.

The union musicians on the show are covered by AFM and AFTRA contracts which have no-strike clauses, which those unions say will be honored. The Academy is similarly pleased and gratified that the two unions that have long been the only ones with jurisdiction and representation of the musical talent on the show, stand alongside us in our efforts to present the 50th Annual Grammy Awards at a level that millions of music fans around the world expect and deserve.

“In closing, let me reiterate our desire to bring this matter to a positive resolution working with the WGA. And to slightly alter a famous saying in our world, ‘The Show will go on.’ We will take whatever action is necessary to ensure that a program so vital to our industry, artists, charitable beneficiaries, and the great city of Los Angeles is held as planned. Accordingly, all preparations by The Academy for our milestone 50th Annual Grammy Awards remain in full-swing,” Portnow concluded.

So will the Grammys really happen? It is going to be a touch and go series of letters, meetings, and press conferences until any type of agreement is reached.

Robot Guitar

Posted in Music on November 14th, 2007 by admin – Be the first to comment

Gibson guitars has come up with the newest innovation in 70 years for the electric guitar.

The robot guitar. After 15 years of work they are now releasing a guitar that will automatically keep in tune. Yep you heard me no stopping every few songs to tune, or to change to special tunings for certain songs. This guitar can switch between tunings with 6 diffrent non standard tunings. So you can easily switch to tunings to play “Honky Tonk Women” by The Rolling Stones and Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” to Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California” and Joni Mitchell’s “The Circle Game.”

Gibson will launch 4,000 limited edition, blue silverburst Les Gibson Robot Guitars around the world on December 7 at a price in the region of $2,500. It expects to roll out a standard robot edition starting in January 2008.

This guitar is targeted from amateurs that have a hard time keeping their guitars tuned to professionals that have multiple guitars with different tunings.

With all innovations this is not without its criticism. “I’m sorry, this is just lazy. With stuff like this, tuning is going to be a lost skill,” wrote LettheBassPlay on the Ultimate Guitar Web site forum.
